College Prep Chemistry with Lab

Lectures: Monday-Wednesday 8:30am-9:30am
Labs: Thursday 8:30am-9:30am

This course has been certified and fulfills the “a-g” subject requirements for admission to the University of California and California State University systems.  It is academically rigorous and requires the student to be highly self-motivated.  Weekly labs will support the subject matter in an engaging and hands-on capacity. Regular attendance, nightly homework, study groups and an organized portfolio will ensure success in this course.

Topics include:

§  Scientific Measurement

§  Chemical names, formulas, and reactions

§  Thermochemistry

§  Bonding

§  Aqueous Systems

§  Acids, Bases, and Neutralization

Integrated Science

Lectures: Monday-Wednesday 9:30am-10:30am
Labs: Thursday 9:30am-10:30am

This course is designed to integrate each of the four disciplines of science (chemistry, biology, earth science, and physics), as well as the process of science, contained in the investigation and experimentation standards.  By “successfully meeting the challenge [of these standards] . . . high school graduates can attain the highest level of science literacy . . .” (2003 Science Framework, Pg.154).

Topics include:

§  Interactions within the Earth’s systems

§  Universal Laws of Nature

§  Chemical compositions

§  Mechanical forces and influences

Middle School Science Courses

Physical Science

This course integrates the scientific fields of physics and chemistry with mathematics through literacy activities, lecture-based instruction, and a variety of hands-on experiences.  Students are provided with critical-thinking opportunities with real-world applications for the purpose of guiding students to a deeper understanding of physical science, while reinforcing science process skills.

Topics include:

§  Energy and Motion

§  Electricity and Energy

§  The Nature, Diversity and Interactions of Matter
